The National Solar Observatory operates or services all of the telescopes on this tour. From 1983 to 2001 the NSO was part of NOAO, but in 2001 it became administratively separate, though the headquarters are still in the NOAO building in Tucson. In addition to the facilities on Kitt Peak, the NSO also operates a solar telescope at Sunspot, New Mexico, in the mountains above Alamorgordo.
