VIP6 A Sky Island arboretum

Along the paths of Kitt Peak, nearly hidden from view, are metal markers that identify native plants by common and scientific names. Although some plants reside in many areas of the West, others such as the Mexican pinon are not common to the United States. Distribution of biological diversity in the "sky islands" of southeast Arizona is related to elevation, aspect, exposure, and moisture. A field guide with colored plates is a must for budding biologists. A partial listing of plants, animals, and insects is included in the back of the book, provided to illustrate the wide diversity of species found on and around Kitt Peak.

Along the paved paths are small metal arboretum markers at ground level that identify native plants. This oak and bench are west of the National Solar Observatory. Photo by GBA.
