Born in Pisa

Galileo Galilei was born on February 15, 1564 in Pisa, Italy, to Vincenzio Galilei, a musician, math tutor, and merchant descended from a Florentine patrician family, and Giulia degli Ammannati, an aristocratic woman from Pescia.

In 1574, the family moved to Florence and Galileo began studies at the Camaldolese Monastery at Vallombrosa. He found he liked the lifestyle of the monks, and in 1578 he officially entered the order as a novice, announcing that he would like to join when he was old enough. His father forbade it and informed Galileo, who was a bright pupil, that he was to study to become a physician, which would bring a far better income. Galileo traveled back home to Florence from Vallombrosa and, although his dream of joining the order had ended, he continued his education at a school managed by the Camaldolese monks.
