In the Footsteps of His Father

Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel was born on November 15, 1738, in Hanover, Germany, to Isaac Herschel and Anna Ilse Mortizen. His father, a passionate musician since his youth, was a career musician in the Hanoverian Guard band. His mother was in charge of raising the six children and had distaste for advanced learning, claiming it was the root of all problems.

Fortunately for the four young Herschel boys, their father took charge of their educations. The two Herschel girls were not so fortunate, and due to the insistence of their mother, were doomed to a childhood of learning nothing outside of tending to household chores.

As the boys grew up, they attended the public school and were also taught music privately at home by their father. Besides music, their father also had a fond appreciation of astronomy, which is where young Wilhelm gained his first spark of interest in the subject. He proved to be an exceptional pupil at home and at school, especially in mathematics and mechanics, and enjoyed deep, idealistic discussions with his father. By the time he was 14 years old, he was accomplished enough on a variety of instruments to become a member of the Hanoverian Guard band, along with his elder brother Jacob.
