Dipping Distance

A dipping distance is when you just catch sight of the very top of a feature. If you know the height of the feature then you can calculate the distance from it to its horizon, add on the distance to your horizon, and you have the dipping distance (see Figure 12.1).

Dipping distances are a good example of when you may be working with the height of your eye in feet, and the height of the feature in metres.
