Wayfinding uses the map in your head; the starting point is navigating by landmarks. This is the basis of all exploration. You move out in one direction from a known base, noting distinctive features along the way, and then return using these landmarks. A known journey can be extended by going further, but if we wish to explore in a new direction we start out all over again from our base (see Figure 4.1). We all do it when we use landmark navigation to find our way back to our hotel in a strange city.
