General relativity

Special relativity was not the end of the road for Einstein. He knew that it represented the first step on a path toward a new theory of gravitation, something which was necessary since the Newtonian theory implied that effects could be transmitted instantaneously over finite distances, whereas relativity limited the speed of transmission to c. In a letter in 1907 he wrote that he was busy on a relativistic theory of the gravitational law with which I hope to account for the still unexplained secular change of the perihelion motion of Mercury.
