Winner: Bill McMullen, Sharbot Lake, Ontario, used a Sigma 17-70mm lens at 17mm on a Canon Digital Rebel XT SLR camera for this 30-second exposure of a starry vista toward the south. During the exposure, a dazzling meteor momentarily reached the brightness of the Moon as it plunged toward the ground.

Honourable mention: Andreas Gada, Oak Heights, Ontario, set up several cameras to automatically record the Leonid meteors on the night of November 16/17, 2009. In the hundreds of images collected, he caught this brilliant sporadic (non-shower) meteor. Read more about Gada's meteor photos that night in the March/April SkyNews. page 33.

Honourable mention: Michel Tournay, Chisasibi, Quebec, recorded this aurora portrait on September 20, 2009, about 30 kilometres east of Chisasibi on the eastern side of James Bay. He used a Nikon D3 with a 28mm f/1.4 lens for the memorable photo.
