Analysis Tools

The IRIS software also contains many analysis tools. These cover photometry, astrometry, polarimetry and spectroscopy. Most of these functions are available through dialog boxes, as many parameters have to be entered. For instance, for photometry, it is possible to choose the aperture circle method, with an

adjustable value for the circle measuring the sky background, or a mathematical function adjusting the star point-spread function to determine its intensity. In the astrometry domain, a database of stars on a CDROM can be used. Figures 6.5 and 6.6 are examples of output using the planetary cartography module.

The module for spectral analysis is especially powerful. It corrects for distortion and extracts the spectral profile, in an optimized way, using a specific algorithm that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio (see Figures 6.7 and 6.8).
