Rocket Futures

Though they have been the workhorses ofthe Space Age (so far), chemical rockets are a dead end for the species if we truly desire to explore and then settle the solar system. Although chemical rockets will certainly never go completely out of style, some other techniques are required for the large-scale opening of the space frontier.

Chemical rockets are not readily reusable and are quite dangerous (a chemical rocket is really nothing more than a bomb that "goes off' slowly and in a usually controlled fashion). Clearly, alternatives are needed. Ideally, those that are relatively safe, reusable, long-lived, and take advantage of the resources provided by nature throughout the solar system will be the next that humanity chooses to use as it expands beyond the Earth.
