A number of good sources on solar-sailing fundamentals and history have been published. A very popular and accessible reference is Louis Friedman's Starsailing (Wiley, New York, 1988). For more of the engineering details, consult jerome L. Wright's Space Sailing (Gordon & Breach, Philadelphia, PA, 1992). A more up-to-date, and more mathematical, treatment is Colin R. Mclnnes' Solar Sailing (SpringerPraxis, Chichester, UK, 1999).
Many representations of solar-sail acceleration have been published and all derive from Einstein's work in the early twentieth century. The solar-sail acceleration equation in this chapter derives from Chapter 4 of G.L. Matloffs Deep-Space Probes, 2nd edn (Springer-Praxis, Chichester, UK, 2005).
Various solar-photon sail configurations and missions are further discussed in the references listed above.
