Home Sweet Galaxy

The universe is not evenly populated with stars and other objects. Just as there are large distances between individual stars, there are large distances between collections of stars called galaxies. Galaxies (of which the Milky Way is one) are enormous collections of stars, gas, and dust.

Typical galaxies contain several hundred billion stars. There are about 100 times as many stars in our Galaxy as there are people on the earth. Astronomers sometimes refer to our own Galaxy with a capital "G" to distinguish it from all of the other galaxies in the universe.
