Although astronomers such as Carl Sagan (1934-1997) have assumed that life develops on virtually every planet capable of supporting it, estimates vary widely. This number, fl, is expressed as a decimal, with the number 1 indicating that there is a 100 percent chance that life will develop on a habitable planet. Estimates range from Sagan's optimistic 1 down to 0.000001—that is, perhaps only 1 out of every million habitable planets actually develops life. This number is very uncertain.
