Way Out of This World

We turn from individual stars and stellar phenomena to some of the largest structures in the universe: the galaxies. We begin at home, with a chapter on our Galaxy, the Milky Way, then move on to an explanation of the three major galaxy types—spiral, elliptical, and irregular—and how galaxies, themselves vast, are often grouped into even larger galaxy clusters, which, in turn, may be members of superclusters. Here is cosmic structure on the greatest scale.

The first two chapters in this part deal with normal galaxies, but there is another galaxy type, the active galaxy, which emits large amounts of energy. We explore such objects as Seyfert galaxies and radio galaxies, as well as one of the most spectacular cosmic dynamos of all, quasars. We also explore the nature of a phenomenon that appears to be occuring in distant galaxies: gamma ray bursters.
