Requirements On Array Detectors From Owl Instrument Studies

Sandro D' Odorico

European Southern Observatory

Abstract: The scientific aims and characteristics of seven possible instruments for the OWL 100 m telescope are summarized. The different instruments are designed to operate in wavelength ranges from 400 nm to 850 jlm offering different configurations for imaging and spectroscopy. The requirements for the active area and properties of the detectors by the different instrument concepts are presented. Reasonable extrapolation of today's detector technology could satisfy all of the main instrument needs, but cost per unit and capability to supply devices in large quantities with homogeneous, guaranteed performance will be critical issues.

Key words: Detector arrays, Overwhelming Large Telescope (OWL), instruments.
