My 7250 Landscaping Designs Review

Highly Recommended

I've really worked on the chapters in this book and can only say that if you put in the time you will never revert back to your old methods.

Overall my first impression of this book is good. I think it was sincerely written and looks to be very helpful.

How Large Should It Be

The observatory buildings (there are three of them a run-off roof observatory, a run-off shed, and a shed for remote telescope control) are almost completely invisible from the house in the summer. What can be seen is merely some boarding, which could be a fence or any normal garden structure. This is the creation of what garden designers call an indefinite boundary . On one glance, the central shrubby bed appears to be the limit of the garden then, on a closer look, the fruit tress and lawn behind this can be seen, and the wooden structures behind these appear to be the limit. In fact, they are not the limit either. A hedge 1.2 m (4 ft) behind them forms the actual boundary. The garden is 25 m (80 ft) long in total, but the idea could be scaled down for shorter gardens. There is a trellis between the fronts of the two observatory buildings, allowing plants to grow in this space (Fig. 2.3). This is necessary because the space behind is used both for the movement of the roof of the...

Cartographic Journey

Nearly a thousand years later than the Ga-Sur map, the Egyptian mayor of Thebes, Sennefur, made himself a tomb that Victorian Egyptologists called the Tomb of the Vineyards because of the garden painting on its ceiling. Yet again this garden plan is amazingly modern, very similar to the slightly too tidy plan views of 18th century grand gardens. The garden extends from a riverside with several walled enclosures and different areas, all viewed clearly from above. Except the trees. In the garden, trees are depicted in orchard areas and alongside the river and paths clearly not one-to-one with real trees, there are too few, more to give an impression. However, the trees are not shown from above, but side-on iconic images, just like in a children's cartoon story. Strangely though, look at a forested area on a modern UK Ordnance Survey map. To distinguish coniferous and deciduous woodland we find small iconic trees, just like those in Sennefur's garden plan more than 3,000 years before.

Everything one can see there resembles Paris steeples, houses, and so forth. So we conclude that Saint-Denis, like Paris, is inhabited. If the universe tends to repeat itself, in gross architecture and building materials, does that mean that it is fitted with the same fine trim and landscaping elsewhere, achieving an economy of detail that we just can't quite make out yet

Public Reaction

After completion the first parcel delivery I had was from Omega and the Rastafarian driver was hooked. I had a very enjoyable 10 minutes showing him around. The next day the chimney sweep and his son arrived, and it so happens that they are space nuts, so there is another tour. E-mails started to arrive from people wishing to have a look. One was out of the blue from a Polish man, Stefan Zietara, who runs an astronomy column for the estate where he lives and has become a firm friend. My surgeon brought his young children. I have always had keen sight, but young eyes see so much more than those that have been around a while. Jupiter is the target that really brings this home to you. Many parents ask to bring their children, but in a few cases I think the youngsters (and parents, too, maybe) are more interested in the indoor carp pool and the fully landscaped model railway in the attic (Yes, the pool and the railway are over-the-top as well).
