Named in memory of Eduard (Cech (1893-1960), Czech mathematician, professor at Charles University in Prague and Masaryk University in Brno. One of his papers, On bicompact spaces, introduced what today is called the Stone-Cech compactification of regular topological spaces. His research in topology is fundamental, but his work was also important in the development of functional analysis. (M 34344)
