Named for the youthful shepherd who so enchanted Selene (the Moon) by his unsurpassed beauty as he lay sleeping on Mt. Latmos that she came down every night to visit him. (H 38)

Named by F. Bidschof (AN 141, 71 (1896)), who was an orbit computer and served as assistant at the Vienna Observatory. For the first time, the name of a male god was used for a minor planet. (A. Schnell) Endymion is also commemorated by a lunar crater.
