Goerdeler

1987 SQio. Discovered 1987 Sept. 29 by F. Börngen at Tautenburg.

Named in memory of Carl Friedrich Goerdeler (18841945), mayor of the towns of Königsberg and Leipzig, respectively (1920-1937). Early on he opposed the fascist dictatorship. After the outbreak of World War II, he became the leading force behind a Resistance group of conservative-minded Germans, planning a coup d'etat against the fascist leader through contacts with a military opposition. Goerdeler's main goal was to restore and institutionalize a state of law. In September 1944, he was condemned to death by the Volksgerichtshof. (M 31613)
