Named in honor of Ireland, known poetically as Erin or Hibernia, to celebrate a year of anniversaries in 1995: the 150th anniversary of the Geological Survey of Ireland, the 150th anniversary of the Queen's Colleges (now University Colleges, Cork and Galway, and Queen's University, Belfast), and the 750th anniversary of the town of Sligo.
