Klotho

Discovered 1868 Feb. 17 by E. W. Tempel at Marseilles.

Named after one of the three Fates. The others are Lachesis and Atropos {see planets (120) and (273)}. Klotho presides over birth and spins destinies. (H 13)

Named Clotho by the Societe Imperiale des Sciences naturelles de Cherbourg.

Tempel proposed also names for the next two planets (AN 71, 97 (1868)): "Il me semble qu'il serait un peu poetique, de donner aux trois dernieres planetes (97), (98) et (99) les noms de 3 Parques: Clotho, Lachesis et Atropos, non pas avec l'idee que le ciseau d'Atropos dut couper le fil de cette recherche, mais avec la pensee de diviser la premiere centaine des petites planetes, qui representent assurement un grand et noble travail astronomique." His naming proposals, however, were not realized. The two other Fates received the numbers (120) and (273), respectively.
