Named in honor of Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Mikhailov {1888-1983}, a prominent Soviet astronomer and gravimetrist, academician, president of the Astronomical Council of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1939-1962), vice-president of the International Astronomical Union (1946-1948), director of the Pulkovo Observatory (1947-1964).
