Schwarzschilda

Discovered 1916 Sept. 23 by M. F. Wolf at Heidelberg.

Named in honor of the German astronomer Karl Schwarzschild (1873-1916), director of the Gottingen (1901) and Potsdam (1909) Observatories. He worked in photometry, geometrical optics, stellar statistics and theoretical astrophysics. (H 82)

Schwarzschild is also honored by a lunar crater. The Schwarzschild black hole, the Schwarzschild radius and the Schwarzschild telescope bear his name.
