Atmosphere

The air that surrounds the Earth is called Earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere is made up of gases that contain tight bundles of atoms called molecules. Gravity holds Earth's atmosphere close to the surface of Earth. Near the surface of Earth the atoms are tightly packed together. When the atoms are packed close together, the atmosphere is said to be dense. Feel the air around you. It has high density. On top of a high mountain, the air density is lower because atoms in the gases are not tightly packed. Most airplanes cannot fly more than 20 miles above the Earth because the density of the air is too low.
