Stars

Stars are suns in ttie distant sky. Our Sun is a star of our solar system. Beyond the planet Pluto, beyond our solar system, are millions of other stars. Our Sun is a medium-sized star, but stars come in many sizes. Stars also range in color. There are red, blue, yellow, and white stars. Some stars circle each other like Earth and the Moon. Sometimes a rare giant star will explode, sending its energy into space and creating a giant cloud of gas.

Clouds of gas and dust in space are called nebulae. The Orion nebula is a huge glowing cloud where new stars are forming. A galaxy Is a gigantic system of billions of stars held together by gravity. Our solar system is a tiny part of the spiral galaxy called the Milky Way. Scientists think that many other stars may have planets circling them, but the stars are too far away for scientists to know for certain.

Look at the chart above. Use the information to put the following stages of a star's life cycle in order from I to 5. Start with what happens first.

_ The star shines steadily for 1,000 million years.

_ The star collapses and becomes a white dwarf.

_ The star runs out of hydrogen in the core, and the core shrinks.

_ The star is formed out of dust and clouds of gas.

_ The star's outer layers form a shell of glowing gas. known as a planetary nebula.
