So far we have discussed only electric charges at rest. However, if an unbound charge is introduced into an electric field it will move.

The figure below depicts schematically an electric current as the net movement of electric charge in a given direction. It can be positive charges moving in the direction of the electric field, or negative charges in the opposite direction, or a mixture of the two.
