The new model

Figure 15.2 is not a good representation of the universe. An infinite empty page would be better. There is no centre, no edge, no preferred directions, and no absolute reference point. The clock and the absolute coordinate frame are figments of our imagination; they are examples of 'preconceived prejudices*.

We can of course put matter, or indeed ourselves, into the model. We can put in stars and planets and describe their motion relative to one another. We can also talk about motion from one planet to another. But absolute motion or motion relative to space itself has no meaning.
