Anthony W England

Quite surprisingly, Dr. Tony England still holds a minor record with NASA. Aged just twenty-five when selected in 1967, he remains the youngest candidate ever to be chosen for training by the space agency in six decades of selecting astronauts. He was also a mission scientist for Apollo 13 when the flight ran into serious trouble on the way to the Moon and, together with the Crew Systems Division at Mission Control, helped devise a makeshift lithium-hydroxide canister that prevented the crew from expiring of carbon dioxide poisoning. Assembly instructions were meticulously transmitted to the imperilled astronauts by radio, and after their safe return, England noted with justifiable pride that the unit they had patched together in space was an exact replica of the one he and his team had constructed.
