Donald L Holmquest

Oak Cliff, Texas, was an exciting place for any youngster to grow up, and Don Holmquest was no exception to this hometown appreciation. Situated two miles south of downtown Dallas on the south bank of the Trinity River, Oak Cliff was an ethnically and architecturally diverse community with a rich heritage stretching back to the first European settlers in the mid-1800s. His forebears had been among many robust pioneers who first settled the area, originally making their homes in hand-hewn cabins and tents on the river's west bank, across from John Neeley Bryan's dynamically growing city, Dallas.

Graced by gentle, rolling hills, the area young Don lived in was filled with sparkling creeks, parks, and massive oak trees - all of which he and his boyhood friends explored with utmost vigour. ''I had a great childhood, spending most of my time in the woods and in tree houses.''
