Gibson Edward Ed George Science Pilot Skylab

Born: 1936 Nov 8 in Buffalo, New York, USA.

Qualifications: (1959) BS in engineering from University of Rochester, NY; (1960) MS in engineering from the California Institute of Technology; (1964) PhD in engineering from CalTech.

NASA career: (1965 Jun 28) selected as a NASA scientist-astronaut, Group 4; (1965— 1967) astronaut academic, simulator, survival and jet pilot training programme; (from 1966) became involved in the AAP (Skylab) programme; (1969) support crew and Capcom, Apollo 12; (1973 Nov 16—1974 Feb 9) flew as Science Pilot Skylab 4 (2017 hours), the third and final manned mission, which set a world endurance record of 84 days 1 hour 15 minutes. Completed three EVAs totalling almost 16 hours; (1974 Nov) resigned from NASA to join Aerospace Corporation, based in Los Angeles, researching in solar physics; (1978) returned to CB at JSC as a senior scientist-astronaut and is assigned support and Capcom role for STS-1; (1980 Oct) resigned from NASA a second time when he was not assigned to an early Shuttle flight. He joined TRW Inc., in Redondo Beach, California. Gibson logged over 2017 hours in space on one mission.
