Space Shuttle A Reliable Access To Space

When America achieved the first manned lunar landing in July 1969, there were plans for at least a further nine landings using the basic Apollo hardware before the expansion of the programme to support longer surface stays and the creation of a rudimentary lunar base. In addition, a new space infrastructure was being planned to operate in conjunction with Apollo hardware, at least for the 1970s and 1980s. This included a new manned spacecraft called Space Shuttle. When first envisaged in 1968, the Shuttle was just one element in a whole space infrastructure that included a large Earth-orbiting space station, a space tug, a lunar base, an Earth-Moon-Earth supply system, and the first manned flights to Mars. Severe budget cuts between 1968 and 1972 and design changes in the Shuttle (with the decision to proceed not with a manned booster but with only a manned orbiter using solid rocket boosters and an external tank) resulted in all but the Shuttle being shelved.
