Waiting for the call

In the twenty-five years following the demise of the Academy of Sciences group, several scientists passed the Medical Commission, but none would receive the authority of the GMVK to begin cosmonaut training. During this same period (1972-97), the Soviet Union, and then Russia, successfully operated a series of space stations under the Salyut and Mir programmes and began cooperative work with NASA, ESA and other international partners to create the International Space Station. It is a great pity that, while numerous pilot-cosmonauts, engineer-cosmonauts, physician-cosmonauts, guest cosmonauts and "space tourists'' have all journeyed to these space stations, no "pure" Russian scientist has ever made the grade.
