Red And Blue Shifts

The Doppler effect explains why light from distant sources is shifted to the red if the source is moving away from us, and to the blue if the source is moving toward us. The movement of the source affects the frequency at which the peaks and troughs of a light wave reach us, and so affects the wavelength we measure.
