Puppis is a rich southern constellation straddling the Milky Way. It was originally part of the ancient Greek figure of Argo Navis, the ship of Jason and the Argonauts, until it was made into a separate constellation in the 18 th century by the Frenchman Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. Puppis represents the ship's stern and is the largest of the three parts into which Argo was divided.
