Cetus is a large but not particularly prominent constellation in the equatorial region of the sky, south of the zodiacal constellations Pisces and Aries. It is home to a famous variable star, Mira, and a peculiar galaxy, M77. Cetus is one of the original 48 Greek constellations listed by Ptolemy in his Almagest. In the famous story of Perseus and Andromeda, Cetus was the sea monster that was about to devour Andromeda before it was killed by Andromeda's rescuer, Perseus.
