Understanding the charts

The constellation charts in this section are oriented with north at the top and south at the bottom. they are all reproduced to the same scale, to give an accurate reflection of the relative sizes of the constellations.

what the charts show the charts show the constellation figure (the pattern of lines joining the bright stars) and the boundaries of the constellation, as defined by the International Astronomical Union, which are outlined in orange. Within each constellation, every star brighter than magnitude 5 is labeled. In addition, all stars brighter than magnitude 6.5 are shown, but not labeled. Deep-sky objects such as galaxies are represented by an icon, as shown in the key at right.
