Did You Know

The 20th anniversary of the closest approach of Voyager 2 to the gas giant Uranus was on 24 January 2006. William Herschel discovered the planet in 1781, but it remained a mysterious planet for 205 years with little known about this distant world.

Before the January 1986 fly-by of Voyager 2, planetary scientists relied on ground-based observational data and inference to determine the nature of the Uranian system. When the programmed fly-by of Uranus approached, scientists and ground-based controllers scrambled to prepare Voyager 2's onboard systems to capture images and analyse the planet.
