Did You Know

The New Horizons spacecraft is expected to start taking data on Pluto and Charon months before the spacecraft arrives at Pluto. On the way, the spacecraft will look for ultraviolet emissions from Pluto's atmosphere and make global maps of Pluto and Charon in green, blue, red and a wavelength that is sensitive to methane frost. The probe will also take spectral maps in the near-infrared spectrum to help scientists determine the surface composition and temperatures. The probe will approach within 9600 km of Pluto and about 27 000 km of Charon.
