Jupiter's outer moons are probably the remnants of a single asteroid that was captured by Jupiter and broken up.

As of 2007, Jupiter has four small inner moons, four large Galilean moons, and 55 other tiny satellites of sizes ranging from 1 km to 170 km across. The tiny 'asteroid-like' satellites orbit between 7 284 000 km and 30 290 000 km distant from the planet, and may be better called 'moonlets'.
