Figure 2.7 The Ulysses space probe.

Did You Know?

The Ulysses space probe was named after a hero of Greek legend. In the 26th Canto of his poem Inferno, the medieval Italian poet Dante describes the last voyage of Ulysses. He has gathered his crew for one final adventure, but storms and setbacks get in the way and his men become restless. Ulysses inspires his wavering comrades with talk of a journey that will search for the uninhabited world behind the Sun, exactly the destination of the ESA-NASA namesake mission.
