Hydrogen energy levels. The right hand column gives the principal quantum number, n.The energies are relative to the state in which the electron and proton are infinitely far apart, so the ground state energy is — 13.6 eV. Transitions (which can be either emission or absorption) are grouped according to the lower level of the transition. For example, the Balmer series consists of emissions with the electrons ending in state n = 2, and absorptions starting in the n = 2 state.
